I reckon that had we had Ince and Dicks at their best in 85/86 in holding midfield and left back we would have won the League. Nothing against Walford/George/Pike or Orr but those are the positions that should have been strengthened in 86/87.

Worth noting that Dicks, Slater and Ince were very young back then and before their prime

This is the team that played liverpool on the final day , to my eyes it looks a good squad , a bit ageing in places.
Obviously the keeper is a big problem , and also the lack of goals . you'd think that if terry brown / cairnes put their hand in the pockets for a decent goal scorer earlier in the year we wuld have been ok ..
i would have thought their was worse teams knocking about at that time ...

The thing is fair enough some people will say it all went sour at the end and Lyall did have two relegations but between Greenwood and Lyall there was a Cup Winners Cup win and runners up, three FA Cup wins, a League Cup Final an incredible promotion a third place finish to the two best sides in the country plus some great cup nights, when we took the cups seriously!!
Could we have won the League with some of the players we had under both? Half the problem was we played on a quagmire so probably did well to play the attractive football G and L tried to play. Coming down with the Christmas decorations was probably partly to do with the weather!
The thing for me is that despite the results both G and L were impeccable gentlemen and I was incredibly proud to be a West Ham supporter because of their integrity. Never on the back or the front pages for anything other than the football and even now you don't have too many Clubs where ex players have such wonderful things to say about the Club at that time.
It's a shame EX Magazine finished because it was a real privilege reading that because an awful lot of the players cared which is why I try not to slag off Noble and Cresswell because they genuinely care for the Club.
Not sure John would have liked the way football has gone with players and agents calling the shots and with all the crap that goes on now. I'm sure he would find it all rather distasteful.

To be fair we were going down . Only question was when after the 4 0 at Newcastle .Beardsley and Goddard destroyed us live on itv .never saw the confidence drain from a team so quickly after that. Paul inces debut if I remember right.

The writing was on the wall in '88 away to Charlton at Selhurst. That day was another level of coma-inducing drivel. Steve 'woolly-woofta' Walford FFS.

2 things I remember from that season,
the "Lyall Out or Div 2" graffiti by the main gates, quite prophetic really, don't think they were known as the Lyall gates then.
Losing at home to Wimbledon, the Lyall Out chanting was loud and came from all corners of the ground with Alvin Martin cunting off the fans in the Chicken Run for not supporting the team. He got some dogs abuse for that.
Interesting times, after we finished 3rd Lyall lost it, he didn't make one good decision. Sad really.

JOHNNY LYALLS CLARET AND BLUE ARMY. JOHNNY LYALLS CLARET AND BLUE ARMY. JOHNNY LYALLS CLARET AND BLUE ARMY. Certainly he had the best name to fit that chant.
A dismal 85/86 pre season had the players sorting things out themselves away from John with a tweak here and there, and the rest is our history. The players had the utmost respect for John.

"...it's quite possible it's something West Ham have always suffered with including now."
Interesting point this, zico. One of the most disturbing things about the end of JL's tenure was the fairly general gnashing of teeth and weeping (of crocodile tears) when he finally got the heave-ho. That might have seemed to many who went over UP at the time as precisely what the majority of the fans wanted.
Truth is he probably was past it, but I'm not sure anyone would have had any kind of sustained success under those owners, just as I don't think anyone will under today's. Doubtless some cunt like rochester will be along to tell it's all MP's fault and he knows all about the inner workings of the club, blah, blah, blah, ad fucking nauseam, the tedious cunt.
Of course he doesn't. As you rightly point out, only those who were in the room know what the options and alternatives were in terms of transfers and how they were presented. If you're signing people like Wilshere and Sanchez something is seriously fucking wrong and it ain't just the manager who's at fault. Interesting to see the board's comms team have gone to work to put the blame on Husillos in the last day or so. We'll see, but I don't imagine any manager having anything other than transitory success under this board.
Admittedly, we could be losing with slightly more aplomb and panache than we are at present, or even slightly less shocking incompetence. Plus ca change, eh ? Mangetout and all that.

I think there are two ways to look at the signings John made, and to be fair it's quite possible it's something West Ham have always suffered with including now. Yes some of the signings later on were poor but they wouldn't necessarily have been John's first choices. People have mentioned Mick Harford on here and I think he was in for Kerry Dixon and one or two others as well but they didn't want to come. You then end up with 3rd. 4th, 5th choices. Or you could just say he lost his touch.
I think a big reason was the ban in Europe. That season we finished 3rd we would have played in Europe and in those days playing in Europe could have been a big draw with players so we may have ended up with better players. Let's just blame Liverpool!!!!
